How much silver is in a Morgan dollar?
A Morgan or Peace dollar weighs 26.73 grams and is 90% silver, 10% copper. That works out to 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver per coin (about 0.859 oz of total metal).
Melt value = number of coins × 0.7734 × silver spot price.
Why they usually sell for more than melt
Even common-date, circulated Morgan and Peace dollars usually trade above melt because collectors and stackers like them. Scarce dates, mint marks and higher grades can be worth many times the silver content. If you have older or better-looking coins, get them looked at by a coin dealer before treating the melt value as the price.
Eisenhower dollars (1971–1978) are copper-nickel clad, except the collector versions struck in 40% silver. They are not 90% silver.
