Silver Eagle melt value vs. price
An American Silver Eagle is a US Mint bullion coin containing 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver. Its melt value is therefore the current silver spot price per troy ounce, times the number of coins.
You will almost always pay more than melt when buying one (a dealer premium over spot) and usually receive a little less than spot plus premium when selling it back. The gap is the premium, and it changes with demand and supply. Use melt value to see what the metal itself is worth.
Troy ounces, not regular ounces
Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces. One troy ounce is about 31.1035 grams, roughly 10% heavier than the 28.35-gram ounce used for food and mail. Spot prices are always quoted per troy ounce.
